Excerpt from Hints on Child-Training

Whatever theory of child-training may show itself in these Hints, has been arrived at by induc tion in the process of my experiences with children since I had to deal with the matter practically, apart from any preconceived view of the principles involved. Every suggestion in these Hints is an outcome of experiment and observation in my life as a father and a grandfather, while it has been carefully considered in the light of the best lessons of practical educators on every side.

These Hints were begun for the purpose of giv ing help to a friend. They were continued because of the evident popular interest in them. They are sent out in this completed form in the hope that they will prove of service to parents who are feel ing the need of something more practical in the realm of child-training than untested theories.

The kind of book I hope to read once every year or two. There were dozens of insights I learned for the first time, along with hundreds of practical thoughts and reminders I needed to hear.

Trumbull writes with conviction, yet his deep compassion as a father also shines throughout. Knowing this book was written in 1890, I had assumed it would at times sound out-of-date or harsh to modern ears. For me, this turned out not to be the case at all.

I was really convicted as a father in a great many areas, and I was spurred to pursue growth in areas toward which I had been giving little thought. For instance, one chapter highlighted the importance of being particularly affectionate toward our children in the final hour leading up to bedtime.

The chapters are short (around 30 of them) and each one delivers unique perspective. A sampling of some of the topics addressed:

-- willing-training, rather than will-breaking
-- letting alone as a means of child-training
-- training a child as a questioner
-- denying a child wisely
-- training a child to self-control
-- never punish a child in anger
-- dealing tenderly with a child's fears
-- training a child's appetite
-- training a child's faith
-- importance of the home atmosphere
-- the value of table-talk
-- the power of a mother's love
-- good-night words

Hints on ChildTraining Classic Reprint H Clay Trumbull 9781330188897 Books Reviews

Incredible wisdom for parents. The tried and true way of child training. I study the chapters repeatedly. A classic, timeless.
I highly recommend this book for those parents needing encouragement and direction in parenting. He has so many excellent tips and insights I haven’t even thought of, and I have 8 children!! Such a rich treasury of advice!
Read it! I bought it and it was definitely worth MORE than the $ I spent on it. I read this book in a day and still pick it up occasionally! Of particular interest to me was the Chapter on Will-Training, Rather than Will-Breaking. I have seen so many children whose wills have been broken, it is maddening to witness and sad to see what this manifests in the young adult. The breadth and scope of knowledge here is PRICELESS. Clear, concise and Bible based, this book is a must have for parents and teachers alike.

As the books first Chapter states "Teaching gives knowledge. Training gives skill. Teaching fills the mind. Training shapes the habits. Training and teaching must go on together in the wise upbringing of any and every child. The one will fail of its own best end if it be not accompanied by the other."

There is something to be learned here for everyone. HINTS ON CHILD TRAINING IS An enriching book that will remain in my library.
I have read a number of parenting books and this is the best I've come across. I am a father of four, age four and under and this has been a huge help in identifying some weak points in my parenting. My wife was also greatly helped in my recounting of a number of the chapters, particularly on scolding and sympathy.
This was penned many years ago, yet the principles are timeless. What this writer has to say is timeless. If one did not know the date of writing, he would think it was written for today, and it is. I highly recommend this book to the parent who wants to be proud of their children in years to come.
I love this book so much. I am reading it slowly, picking it up to read a chapter when my parenting needs some inspiration. And it is helping to shape the way that I view parenthood and my children and the things that are really important.

I realize this book is old, but its thoughts to me feel so fresh - whether on discipline (which other reviews have covered well), or manners, companions, eating, even Sabbath keeping. (As odd as this sounds, the chapter on Sabbath is one of my favorites and has changed our weekends here in a good and peaceful and fun way.) There are thirty chapters, each with hints on individual gems like these.

And... there are a couple of things he says that I am not sure I agree with, but as this reads more like grandfatherly advice than psychological arguments, that actually feels irrelevant. He is not proposing a method for me to adopt as much as opening my mind to think about each of the topics he addresses. I believe I am a better parent for buying this book.

If you are a parent who, like me, gets easily bogged down by books full of methods and suggestions and operates better from a place of inspiration, I think you will like this book.
This is a wonderful book!! I heard about it 20 years ago and am so disappointed I didn't buy it then! (My children probably are, too.) A wonderful balance of age old instruction in diligently training children and showing them compassion, patience, sympathy, love etc written by Elisabeth Elliot's great-grandfather in his 60's after years of observation & practice. A rich book full of treasures with short chapters focusing on many different topics that you can read where wanting to focus your efforts. Sometimes we forget what it's like to be a child and approach situations from only our adult perspective and I appreciated his wisdom in taking into account that while something may seem small & trivial to us, to a child it's huge to them. So much to gain from his different chapters that touch on basically showing a child sympathy. Not sappy, or them getting away with things they shouldn't, but a beautiful picture of a trusting relationship between parent & child. Definitely an all-time favorite I will continually read, read & read again!!!
